Gaddesden Meadows, Herts.
Mare's-tail (Hippuris vulgaris) sends shoots skywards. An emerging algal bloom is found to be Spirogyra with its helical chain of chloroplasts throwing out bubbles of oxygen.
The mythical-looking Greater Tussock-sedge (C. paniculata) was flowering.

We REALLY need to separate out the social justice and environmental action elements of sewage campaigning.
Yes it’s unjust for water companies to profit from bad practice, and maybe the responsible execs/shareholders do need locking up.

But that alone WONT FIX OUR RIVERS🧡

Question from a citizen scientist: What’s this orange runoff?

My initial thoughts are iron leaching. The area has known coal and iron deposits, which have been quarried for centuries.

Question: If I’m right, is this leaching natural or anthropogenic (exacerbated by quarrying)?

April’s aquatic invert survey was a revelation. Yes, it’s great to find a caseless cadis but who knew fishes had a larval stage? Luckily we have a marine biologist amongst us who informed on this little speck of life in pic 2.
