Brutal read for government. This is one extract: 'During the Tory leadership contest I had cause to ask several times if Truss knew what she was talking about when it came to economic policy... Many might conclude that question has now been answered — definitively'

I’ve just had the most astonishingly bleak call with a senior Tory about the current prime minister. Then you remember she’s been prime minister for three weeks.

🚨NEW🚨
On the Bank of England intervention:
Am told the BoE were responding to a “run dynamic” on pension funds - a wholesale equivalent of the run which destroyed Northern Rock.
Had they not intervened, there would have been mass insolvencies of pension funds by THIS AFTERNOON.

Few journalists calling asking about 'pension funds going bust'/'is this a financial crisis'. The basic answer is no - higher rates IMPROVE the position of most pension funds BUT because of how they hedge against interest rate changes they now need to find a lot of cash quickly

I don't want to disappoint those wanting a speedy denouement to current market events. But it's a long and repeated game. We have a floating currency which withstands day to day market pressures. London is one of the deepest capital markets in the world. 1/
