Alex Katz has been painting for 77 years. The prolific painter is known for the accessibility of his work, often portraying the people he's come across in a long career and even longer life. Anthony Mason spoke with Katz, as a much-anticipated retrospective exhibition opens.

New York's Guggenheim Museum opened #OnThisDay in 1959.

The iconic example of modernist architecture was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as a hub for new art and ideas.

An inverted oatmeal dish. A hot-cross bun. A washing machine. These are all names New Yorkers called the Guggenheim Museum before its doors opened #OTD in 1959.
