While the connection between hand washing and preventing disease may be better known, a lack of facilities, investment and behaviour change work means it still often goes unpracticed. This equates to high numbers of preventable deaths.

Over a century later, his work remains valid but still not widely practiced. Around the world, 1 in 3 health facilities still lacks hand washing facilities.

Semmelweis began compiling the evidence. He logged the findings of and the data that would show definitively the difference hand washing could make to maternal mortality. However, his work never received the global respect and recognition it deserved until after his demise.

Semmelweis tried to spread the word but was met with little appreciation for their advice. Doctors were reluctant to accept that the deaths of patients potentially lay at their door. Hand washing after each patient was also thought to be too time consuming.
