Woke up with a big smile yesterday after receiving one of the ICRS Graduate Fellowships! 🎉🥂 With the help of International Coral Reef Society I will study how the loss of habitat structure affects damselfish cognition and personality 🐠🧠

I feel so honored to have been awarded the International Coral Reef Society Ruth Gates Fellowship. It means so much to me and I can't wait to explore solutions for coral under ocean deoxygenation here in the FutureReefsLab 🪸

If you look carefully, you’ll find ONE location across the vast southern Great Barrier Reef that is coloured blue

It’s the only tiny spot where heat exposure didn’t exceed the 4 Degree Heating Weeks threshold that triggers coral bleaching.

We’ve never seen bleaching like this.

Shocking images of coral bleaching at the largest Brazilian marine protected area (MPA Costa dos Corais). We are now facing the worst ever recorded thermal stress event!

Global bleaching events do not affect all coral reefs equally and require a suite of global, regional, and local interventions, emphasising the need for regular monitoring, highlights Dr Britta Schaffelke, @AIMS & global coordinator
