While choosing between bailouts and restructuring of banks, policymakers chose bailouts that effectively rewarded reckless business activity. This led to weaker banks which restricted essential lending to working people and subsequently a lagging economy.

Tracing the history of how the Federal Reserve bailed out the Goldman Sachs & JP Morgan through AIG, Damon Silvers shows how the financial crisis set the precedent of public money rescuing private failure. This has laid the foundations of the long-term damage to global democracy.

Following the neoliberal ideology of hollowing out the state & shifting the balance of power towards the private sector, policymakers in the US resorted to a form of regressive Keynesianism where it drove growth by spurring private debt & removing important financial regulation.

Speaking as the Deputy Chair of the US Congressional Oversight Panel for Troubled Asset Relief Program, Damon Silvers emphasises that the legacy of the crisis is that it effects the environment in which the policy is made to tackle today’s most significant global problems.
