Without a framework for text & data mining licensing, AI developers will continue to sidestep creators’ & publishers’ rights to use their content for free. Opt-in individual & collective licensing ensures creators retain control & gain benefit from the monetization of their work.

Copyright exception for AI developers is an attack on creators' livelihoods. Unlicensed & uncompensated AI training on copyrighted books isn't mere 'data mining'—it's an affront to creators' rights. Machine-generated works shouldn't have an unfair advantage over human creations.

Canadian books are being used without consent or compensation to train generative AI. Tech giants like Meta have fueled their platforms with thousands of Canadian works found in the pirated Books3 corpus. We need AI policy that doesn't value conglomerates over Canadian creators.

This #WorldBookandCopyrightDay , we’re sharing the impacts generative AI is currently having on Canada's book industry. Everyday publishers are facing new & complex copyright challenges due to AI, all the while having to deal with a broken fair dealing system at the foundation.
