: For political prisoners knowing that they’re not forgotten can be difference between hope & despair. This excellent campaign from The Committee for Freedom in Hong Kong Foundation to send letters to Jimmy Lai does just that indexoncensorship.org/2022/10/postca…

To my friends in the media:
This is a time of high drama, I agree. But while you gossip endlesly about who's in and who's out, you have almost entirely ignored the Public Order Bill that was passed in the Commons this week: the most draconian legislation of the modern era.

Have signed this letter alongside two hundred and ten Turkish authors, including the country’s sole Nobel laureate, Orhan Pamuk, to protest a newly ratified Media Law that introduces one- to three-year prison terms for “spreading disinformation.” al-monitor.com/originals/2022…

It's basically that really unsatisfying moment where all the human rights orgs - who have been raising the alarm about the attacks on our protesting rights in the UK for years now - are being proven right

Braverman's Public Order Bill is latest escalation from a government that's been chipping away at our protesting rights for years. We covered it in detail in Index on Censorship in 2018 where we could see a trend developing - city centres where you can't protest etc. Time to wake up

How many of you know what Cruella Braverman's Public Order Bill contains?
It's frankly unbelievable: legislation you might expect in Russia, Iran or Egypt. Here's a summary from my column today:

Just noticed that all of mine and Reuters' questions about the assault of the Hong Kong protester on the grounds of the Chinese Consulate in Manchester were wiped from the official transcript of yesterday's Chinese foreign ministry briefing... fmprc.gov.cn/mfa_eng/xwfw_6…

I'm finally out of Iran and feel safe enough to talk about the situation publicly with an account bearing my name.
The crackdown in Iran is way worse than you think, even if you've been following the news.
Institutions like Amnesty International and news outlets try to stick/
