PRIMER ON KENPOM RANKINGS

Here is my attempt to explain the KenPom rankings.

I would welcome Ken Pomeroy to chime in if I am misstating anything.

The KenPom rankings most referred to in the college basketball industry are based on KenPom’s metric called Adjusted Efficiency…

St. John's had the following rankings pre-tournament:

KenPom: 25th NET: 36th KPI: 71st

Here are Virginia's rankings:

KenPom: 69th NET: 54th KPI: 38th

In their final games of the season:

St. John's scored 90 pts vs. UConn
UVA scored 42 points vs. Colo St

In the BE semis St. John's scored 90 pts against UConn and lost by 5 pts.

Since that game UConn has allowed:

57 Marquette
52 Stetson
58 NW
52 SDSU
52 Illinois (4th KenPom in Offense)
72 Bama (2nd KemPom in Offense)
60 Purdue (3rd KenPom in Offense)

The NCAA tourney expanded to 68 teams in 2011.

Pre-tourney, here are the lowest KenPom ranked teams not to make the field of 68 for each season:

2024 St. John's 25th (lowest KP ranking of any team over this period)
2023 Rutgers 35th
2022 Oklahoma 30th
2021 Duke 33rd
2020 no…

I looked at the pre-tournament KenPom rankings of each tournament eligible team since 2001.

The team with the lowest KenPom ranking not to make the NCAA tournament over that period was Missouri State Basketball in 2006.

Mizz St. had a KenPom rank of 22 pre-tournament.

The KPI metric doesn't think much of UConn.

The KPI rankings don't think much of UConn.

St. John's lost to UConn in the BE semifinal 95-90.

Samford lost to Purdue by 53 points this season.

For those 2 games, Samford had a higher KPI score: 0.051 for Samford and -0.000 for St. John's.

Mitchell Robinson's FG% is 73.5%. The ALL-TIME FG% record for a szn is 72.7% by Wilt in 1972-73.

In order to qualify as the NBA szn FG% leader, a player needs to make 300 FGs. MR has 216 FGs and needs to avg 3.7 made FGs over NYK's 23 gms.
