I do remember around adolescents to young adulthood the weird things men my age would get hung up on. Toe out, eating a banana, wearing pink, rolling your eyes, liking the wrong sport, etc. It is indeed a straitjacket for many.

My one advice for folks in the first year on tenure track is the same for grad school, make friends with staff. Don't piss off staff. They are all powerful and so freaking helpful.
