Paying Black & female journalists way less hurts our city bad. It’s totally unacceptable. These folks who I’m lucky to call friends are standing up for the journalists of tomorrow and Chicago. I’m with them forever.

This statement — shared nine hours after police cleared the camp — pins the clearing on DePaul. It says nothing about the role the Johnson adminstration had in facilitating or impeding.

Johnson “supports the right to lawful and peaceful protest,” it says.

“CPD messed it up today. So because of that, we’re not filing … We’re going to be protesting no matter what,” said American Muslims for Palestine chair Nida Sahouri.

She ripped in half the permit that protest leaders said they planned to submit today.

CPD officers cleared the DePaul Gaza solidarity encampment early today.

Mayor Brandon Johnson has tried to distance his administration & police force from such clearings. Here's his office's full statement on the clearing at UChicago's camp, flagging CPD not participating:
