Those guns have wreaked havoc on too many schools, playgrounds, and families. I’m celebrating Father’s Day today by hugging my kids tighter and recommitting to the fight against unlawful and unreasonably easy access to guns. I hope you do too.

It wasn’t a drive-by fistfight or knifing. It was a shooting made possible by the ubiquity of guns. We weren’t protected by our educations, the money we make or my White House job.

Praise God I didn’t join the brotherhood of fathers who are grieving today instead of celebrating.

None of those Green Playground parents did.

My wife's call took me back to the night I saw a guy shot 3 cars away in a parking lot drive-by when I was 16. It was terrifying. I imagined my daughter, her sitter and all those children in the park ducking and scurrying away from the Green Playground in fear.

Fathers Day seemed like time to share >> Last week a drive-by shooter opened fire at a park full of kids – incl my 2 yo daughter. We call it the “Green Playground” b/c of the color of the slides. A guy was shot 3x not far from where my daughter played. She’s fine. I’m not.

Charlie died when I was 5. Today I stood in the Rose Garden of the White House (where I work) while my boss VP Kamala Harris watched President Biden sign the Emmett Till anti-lynching law 123 yrs after my great grandfather fled Ga to escape a wannabe lynch mob. #America 4/4

Charlie never went back to GA. He ended up in Detroit where I was born decades later. A flight from a lynch mob was the start of our Great Migration story. If McKinley had listened to Ida B. Wells those men who showed up at Charlie’s house would’ve been federal criminals. 3/

Another mob of white men caught Sam Hose and hung him on April 23, 1899. That same week my great grandfather used a fake birthdate and address to enlist in the US Army. On the run, w/n weeks he was a Buffalo Soldier, in Cuba at the end of the Spanish American War. 2/
