The assault on Rafah is another utterly despicable war crime.

As bombs rain down on a trapped and terrified population, we implore our government to find an ounce of humanity and end its complicity in this senseless massacre.

Wake up. This is not war. This is genocide.

Our Government must do more than issue yet more hollow statements if it is to help prevent what would be an unimaginable bloodbath in Rafah.

It must act. Starting by ending arms sales to Israel.

These arms sales mean our Government is directly complicit in Israel's war crimes.

An attack on Rafah where 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering is a war crime, and it must be met with consequences.

That starts with the UK backing the ICC’s war crimes investigation, ending arms sales to the Israeli military, and upholding the UN's ceasefire resolution.

There needs to be an urgent and significant step change in the Government's approach to this horrendous conflict.

The UK can no longer allow itself to remain complicit in the deaths of civilians. It must immediately end sales of arms to Israel.

Today a ceasefire has been accepted by Hamas. Any move now by Israel into Rafah is a repudiation of international efforts to complete a ceasefire

The ceasefire, no offensive on Rafah, the ramping of aid and release of hostages is the outcome that is needed

Nothing else will do

Today I joined the Leeds Trades Council May Day March For Peace.

In my speech to the 134th annual Leeds May Day Rally, I reflected on the importance of trade union struggles past and present.

And the need for a ceasefire in Gaza, an end to arms sales to Israel and justice for war crimes.

One simple first step for Labour decision makers to demonstrate they have listened to what so many people are telling them on Gaza, not just members of the Muslim community but from right across our society, is to demand an end to arms sales to Israel.
