Today’s Grazing: I wrote an essay/review/something about “Piglet,” a very good book that’s about food and women’s bodies and appetites and three towering croquembouches.

I asked Alex to file this two weeks early so I could edit it before I left my job. That’s how much I like reading what Alex Prewitt writes.

This story is both delightful and frustrating — in the sense that it made me desperate to read 'What Every Women Should Know about Wine,' which appears to be for sale absolutely nowhere on the entire world wide web. washingtonpost.com/food/2024/04/0…

DAY 3 OF UNDEREMPLOYMENT: A newsletter! About cake and a general state of panic, with a bread pudding recipe tacked on at the end. Subscribe? Or better yet, upgrade to a paid subscription — because somebody's got to pay the bills, and that somebody is me.

PSA: I just subscribed to Laura Bassett's new newsletter, Nightcap. The intro post is a real doozy of a look at two Shitty Media Executives — and it explains some of the unfortunate reasons why so many great journalists no longer work in major newsrooms. laurabassett.substack.com

Day two of underemployment: I'm working from my patio, and multiple passers-by have stopped to admire my tulips and ask me questions about them. I haven't felt this accomplished in ages.
(Are underemployment updates going to become a regular thing until I find more work? Maybe!)

I guess I should’ve tweeted this before the eclipse, but … I forgot. So, better late than never: I wrote a little essay about the mind-bending awe of witnessing totality.

Come for the headline, stay for the waiter who’s out there in Cleveland talking about eclipse cults to anyone who will listen.

For one week each month, the food newsletter becomes a books newsletter, and that week is now. Here's everything I read in March: three mysteries, two essay collections and a food-adjacent novel.

A friend and I once tried to calculate how many hot dogs we'd eaten over the course of our lives. We're both enthusiastic carnivores AND attendees of sporting events, and neither of us got close to the estimates Big Hot Dog computes.

This is my favorite thing I've read all year.
