It's #CleanAirDay today and here at Homes Under the Microscope we are counting airborne microfibres sampled by our #citizenscientists. Microfibres and microplastics from textiles are an important, but poorly understood, type of indoor air pollution.
Sharing our Homes Under the Microscope UWE Air Quality research Research from UWE Bristol on microplastics Festival of Nature
A great keynote by Dr Ben 🏴 in session 1 of #PlasticsFuture2023 Fantastic to hear about the Homes Under the Microscope project and the use of citizen science in microplastic research 🔬
Kirsty Pringle gave an insightful talk promoting open software practices to ensure the reproducibility of climate research. She encouraged submitting software to the Research Excellence Framework, removing paywalls on climate research and leading by example.
Over 16? We need you! Homes Under the Microscope project would like to understand attitudes and behaviours of people on their clothing. Answers will be used to shape research in airborne microplastics. 5 min survey here: uwe.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9A… Science Communication Unit, UWE Bristol
Very happy that our perspective piece on embedding citizens (acknowledging the challenge in using this term) within airborne microplastic and microfibre research has been published. Top job, Dr Laura De Vito, Margarida Sardo Kirsty Pringle Enda Hayes et al. cambridge.org/core/journals/…
In #CPPlastics, Dr Ben 🏴, Dr Laura De Vito, Margarida Sardo, Kirsty Pringle, Enda Hayes et al argue for citizen inclusion in measuring #microplastic distribution. Read Embedding citizens within airborne microplastic and microfibre research ➡️bit.ly/3sNQWFq #plastic
Homes Under the Microscope helped to shed light on the vast quantities of airborne #microfibres of cellulosic, man-made cellulosic and synthetic origin.🏠 Congratulations to the team at UWE & UoL!👏 Kirsty Pringle Dr Ben 🏴 @LagganSophie Science Communication Unit, UWE Bristol UWE Air Quality
"The Rainforest is on fire!" Fully funded #PhD position - Deadline 5th Jan 2024. Working with Dominick Spracklen Ailish Graham and the team from nafas indonesia we will assess the impact on population health through observations & models. panorama-dtp.ac.uk/research/the-r… NERC Panorama DTP Natural Environment Research Council
Even if #COP28 achieves the best possible outcome, any agreement will be just a pledge—which is then easily broken. To guarantee real change, we need new, national law. We need the Climate & Ecology Bill. Join Chris Packham—back the #CEBill today. 👉 zerohour.uk/back-the-bill
Fantastic to work on this with Kirsty Pringle and many others, it shows what a great team can produce. Thanks to Gary Fuller for the words. Obviously inspired by Ed Hawkins original #climatestripes. Also via The Conversation theconversation.com/these-colourfu…
New images reveal global air quality trends 🌍 The global concentrations of one of the main air pollutants known to affect human health have been graphically illustrated for the first time by a team of scientists from Leeds, NC State University, Software Sustainability Institute, EPCC and Met Office - UK.

Huge shout-out to the The Guardian production team for creating this full page on McQuaid and Pringle's #airquality stripes project, with words by me. (Jim McQuaid 🇺🇦 🇪🇺, Kirsty Pringle , Ed Hawkins)
The reaction to #airqualitystripes has been fantastic, lots of plaudits as well as a number of interesting ideas to take forward. Given the huge overlap between Climate/Net Zero and #airquality, the team from The Conversation put together a great article theconversation.com/the-new-climat…
Thankfully less red showing on the Australian plots than for other global cities. Great visualisation. See the smoke influence from 2019/20 bushfires on annual PM2.5. 🔥 #AirQualityStripes Jim McQuaid 🇺🇦 🇪🇺 Kirsty Pringle airqualitystripes.info
🔴 We are happy to announce that the SSI has received funding through the UK Research and Innovation Digital Research Infrastructure Programme for a fourth phase which will last from 2024 to 2028 and will be led by Arts and Humanities Research Council. On my way to my first (yes I’m a bit late to the party) #RSECon24 by Society of Research Software Engineering: looking forward to a packed schedule (working on my slides for a session on environmentally sustainable software Thursday Kirsty Pringle Software Sustainability Institute 🌱). …Not an RSE but I’ll try to blend in 😶🌫️
The response from our #AirQualityStripes has been great, lots of new ideas already going forward. I can report that there are definitely more cities in the pipeline (this is the most common question!) And also Kirsty Pringle plans to write up our AQ Stripes 'journey' as a paper!
