I concur! StoryGraph’s reading data is actually amazing. I’ve been tracking my genre/style/author data by hand for years. This is life changing for a data-obsessed reader. Now, give me a kids version.

This is me launching a full-scale investigation to figure out how Amelia Bedelia made it onto my top 10 borrows of the last 30 days list and Dog Man and Minecraft did not. What in the 1980's-nostalgia is happening right now?!!

The best part of my job is that I get to coordinate visits and thus spend time with authors I love and respect and somehow get paid to do it. Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow was phenomenal at NIST Int. School ! Our kids are still buzzing.

Promoting NIST Int. School ‘s upcoming visiting author by charting who has read her books. We are excited to see how these numbers grow leading up to the visit and can’t wait to visit with Jamilah Thompkins-Bigelow in a couple of weeks!

Every once in awhile there is an author who is so acutely connected to childhood that they write about something like fear of a shark in a swimming pool who wants to eat you and you alone, and you feel so seen because who doesn’t connect to that kind of nonsensical anxiety? 👏🏻

Really excited for our next community book club NIST Int. School where we are diving into literary retellings in all their forms (a villains perspective, new narrator, new genre) and looking at the craft moves of authors who rewrite beloved works. So excited for these discussions!

We are in a temporary space this year while we work on building a new library and we are limited for space and seating, but does that stop 70 kids from smushing in and finding spots to read on the floor at recess? Nope. Never. ♥️

I didn’t think I could love Ryan Gosling more but alas, here we are. Please explain to me how a film gets nominated in nearly every major category, yet the director doesn’t deserve recognition. And then let’s unpack the irony of that film being the feminist juggernaut of Barbie.

A groundbreaking study shows kids learn better on paper, not screens. Now what? theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

With the exception of Little Women (the sole classic for young girls) and The Virgin Suicides (which feels out of place on this list) I have read none of these by choice. Classics don’t inspire every reader. Don’t make your students read classics all year.

Publishers give age ratings, and librarians use their professional judgement and knowledge of the communities they serve to make decisions. It’s why I don’t have a ton of manga in ELE- much of it is not age appropriate, and I, a professional, can see that. We deserve trust.
