Breaking: New crack has just opened near houses in #grindavik after the #eruption that started this morning in SW #Iceland

Aerial footage from the Icelandic Coast Guard shows the proximity of the lava flow to the town of Grindavík. Measures are being taken to defend infrastructure.

Heroic and successful efforts were made to save working machines close to the edge of the #lava . The machines were being used to construct defensive walls against lava flow into # #Grindavík - the same walls along which workers drove the machinery to safety.

A new fissure opened & volcanic eruption began this morning - the fifth eruption on Reykjanes peninsula in the last four years. The fissure is around 450 m north of Grindavík. Town was safely evacuated last night. Flights to/from KEF int’l airport unaffected. View from residence:
