In 1753, the building of the Royal Exchange began. Prior to this building stood 4 closes - Mary King's Close, Stewart's Close, Pearson's Close and Allen’s Close.

In 1811, it was acquired by the city council and rebranded as the City Chambers Building.

All women in Early Modern Scotland were bound by legal restrictions over their property as well as their bodies. They were unable to instigate legal proceedings or represent themselves in court. Unless, of course, their husbands gave them permission.
