Thank you to the AAS for this honour. It was very unexpected. A healthy dose of imposter syndrome here! Ruby Payne-Scott left big shoes.

How much does a model cost? Our new paper reports the costs of different ecosystem models to support fisheries. We should consider cost-benefit tradeoffs when selecting modelling frameworks for ecological decisions doi.org/10.1111/jfb.15…. free version 👉 arxiv.org/abs/2403.17446

Thrilled to have this paper picked up by PLOSCompBiol, and equally excited to have my 'serious face' on the QUT website!

I'm honestly not sure what the problem is. Fewer postdocs because they have found high-paid jobs seems like a success story to me. I mean you do a postdoc to get a good job, right? RIGHT?

In Australia we get a bit angsty when discussing migration. In this column I try to show what type of visas migrants are on, discuss which types of migrants I see as extremely unlikely to decline in the foreseeable future. I started my discussion by putting the current narrative…

If bycatch species and fishing grounds only partially overlap, are marine protected areas still useful?

In many cases yes! And especially where vulnerable marine ecosystems are concerned.

What's a good resource for learning species distribution modeling theory from the perspective of a mathematical ecologist? I want deep understanding (not a how to), that walks through first principles, assuming the reader is comfortable with calculus-based probability theory.
