Offshore wind has a huge potential in Europe, but it currently remains largely untapped - with only the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark and Belgium seriously developing it. This and more insights in our Bruegel European Clean Tech Tracker: bruegel.org/dataset/europe…

If forecasted gas demand from REPowerEU is realised, the EU will import *very little* LNG in 2030.

We feel the proposals by Enrico Letta are not only compelling but essential to ensure the continued strength and integrity of the EU's single energy market.

Particularly the nod toward the need for far better energy data enabling cooperation.

Updated Bruegel EU27 gas import tracker:
-EU Storage is at all-time high seasonal level
-EU and Ukraine started gas storage injections
-Imports via Turkstream are on a decreasing trend but remain at a seasonally high level

In a rainy evening that will see half of Brussels reading the Enrico Letta Report, I did a quick word-count game to compare it with the Delors Report of 1989. Nothing scientific here, but some possibly interesting views on how priorities have changed (or not) in these 3 decades.

📈Who drives the global electric cars revolution? China of course, with 14 million EVs on the road, compared to 5.7m in🇪🇺 and 3m in🇺🇸 - and it is accelerating fast. This and many other green transition facts in our Bruegel European Clean Tech Tracker: bruegel.org/dataset/europe…

🇩🇰 is the EU's wind champion, and continues to deploy at a comparatively fast rate

🇸🇪🇳🇱🇫🇮 are the top 3 current deployers

🇩🇪 stands out for slow pace contrasted with new and ambitious policy targets

We're heading for serious overcapacity in the battery market. Good news for automakers and EV buyers, but challenging times ahead for new entrants to the battery game.

A simple word frequency analysis of NECP reports show that there is interesting insights to be gleamed from these reports, which should be explored further, argue Ben McWilliams and Georg Zachmann in this first glance

☀️Comparing installed solar capacity per capita allows for a fairer comparison across countries. In 2022, The Netherlands led the way, followed by Germany, Belgium and Denmark!

The cost of victory 'looking too high' relies on the assumption that for said companies, maximising shareholder value is the only goal.

Is this necessarily the case?

Perhaps the goal was affordable solar PV to enable a global energy transition ...

How much do EU countries think about each other when drafting energy and climate policy?

To provide a rudimentary insight, we plot the number of times countries mention each other in NECPs.

(thick lines = lots of mentions)

🔋The EU’s current deployment needs are covered by domestic battery manufacturing

In 2023, we estimate 204 GWh cell supply compares with 210 GWh demand.

The map shows projects we have identified as operational or under construction by 2023. These projects total 600 GWh.
