Former spokesperson for families of Israeli hostages in Gaza says they learned that after October 7, Hamas offered to release all civilian hostages to prevent a ground offensive.

“No doubt that Netanyahu is preventing a deal to release the hostage.” zman.co.il/481871/

We’ve gone from “how dare you suggest that Israel would target a hospital” to “well clearly the man in the unmarked mass grave was a terrorist who fought back while his hands were tied up so clearly he died in combat, how dare you suggest he was executed!”

This is a great example of bad faith reporting. There’s been a guy hanging outside Columbia *for years* with a sign that says the Jews did 9/11. Was that also representative of anti-Semitism at Columbia? Welcome to New York City, for chrissake.

Even Germany, which has not generally acquitted itself well re Israel/Gaza, is restoring funding to UNRWA after Israel failed to produce evidence backing up its accusations of ties to Hamas/Oct 7.

US should do the same.

Have you noticed how talk of 'cancel culture' and 'free speech on campus' and 'there is no right to be not offended' and ridicule of 'safe spaces' ended after 7th October?

Hey guess what: Internal US politics really do have a decisive effect on the Middle East. Things are probably not going to get much better there without a lot of legitimately uncomfortable discussion/reevaluation here. The angst over protests suggests we're not prepared for that.

zeynep tufekci Jonathan Chait Chait's argument puts a near-impossible onus on students: To support Palestinians in some vague 'universalist' way without criticizing systems&ideologies that ensure Palestinian oppression&statelessness. This becomes especially unrealistic given the current violence.

If Gaza were open to outside journalists, the news cycle would be dominated by mass graves, not protests.

And there would be more protests.

Don’t be silly Muhammad, the mainstream media doesn’t have time for mass graves as they are busy covering a college campus protest (against the people who dug those graves!)

Unfortunately I don’t think this damning report will sway US officials who shamefully led the push to cut funding to UNRWA just as Palestinians were beginning to starve to death and among whom it’s become an article of faith that UNRWA is a terrorist-compromised organization.
