Whatever your politics, if Rishi Sunak becomes the UK’s next Prime Minister it’d be historic: the first person of colour with the keys to No 10. But, it wouldn’t mean racism is defeated, that it’s a time for complacency or that the work is over. It’s only a beginning. Exhibit A:

You can see the pragmatic reason but it’s wrong. Britain belongs in the European project. And it will only resume that stance, if it eventually does, if political leaders make the case for it and tell the truth about the damage Brexit has done.

She’s getting deserved derision for this but it’s worth watching in order to gain a sense of the incoherence as well as immorality of a politics that demands *Nato* end the war in Ukraine. The cause is not to advance peace but to defend aggression & deny atrocious war crimes.

Thrilled to say I now have the backing of 100 MPs. I will put the country first and deliver stability and return confidence. I can't give any details of how I would do this because I am putting the country first and not details.

Even if you disregard his demonstrated unfitness to hold public office and record of failure, this argument makes no sense. Britain doesn’t have a directly elected PM. It’s not that type of democracy. It would also be a death wish for the Conservatives, which is not a good thing.

As the person to lead them into the election Tory MPs can choose either:

1. Another risky unknown (Penny, Ben)

2. A toxic known (Boris)

3. The least toxic known (Rishi)

With such a narrow path to any remote semblance of election victory, not sure it’s that difficult on paper.

The New York Times, maintaining its tradition of never getting getting anything right about Britain, have managed to confuse The King with both Charles II and Jesus in one headline.

The problem with the UK Tory party is not the personal defects of the captain. The problem is that you’re not eligible for the captaincy unless you agree it was a brilliant idea to scupper the ship in 2016- and can convincingly act baffled why it has been sinking ever since

Rory had many trolls go after him for pointing this out, as did I for agreeing with him. The trope of “globalism” was a mainstay of Nazi ideology and is intrinsically antisemitic. So don’t whine if you’re caught employing it: you deserve the opprobrium.

There are several very good potential candidates for Conservative leader. But choosing Boris now would be — and I say this advisedly — an absolutely catastrophic decision.

We all have linguistic peeves, and are hence tempted to erroneously assume they’re the test of “correctness”. But I do share Sky News’s preference for the spelling of “forgo” here.

Picking Boris Johnson is basically equivalent to the Tories saying: the entire past six months didn't happen, it was all just a bad dream, don't worry dear, it's ok now. And it won't work, but they will probably do it anyway

Only a nation which was gripped by pessimistic despair and no longer believed that there could be a serious response to its unfolding tragedies would want to take refuge in the leadership of a clown. The Rest Is Politics

A comment that is beyond conventional measures of silliness and absolves the departing PM of her catastrophic economic incompetence. Amazingly there were some people, during Labour’s 2015-20 embrace of irrationalism and antisemitism, who touted Ms Pidcock as a future leader.
