In Geneva today for very good talks with UN High Commissioner Volker Türk. We discussed how best to work together defending human rights. The EU remains a strong supporter of UN Human Rights office and its strong, independent mandate - more important than ever.

I warmly welcome the decision by His Majesty King Hamad Al Khalifa to pardon 1,584 prisoners on the eve of Eid-el-Fitr. It manifests a commitment to fostering a unified country. We encourage Bahrain to pursue & maintain its obligations, incl as regards human rights defenders.

A pleasant meeting to bid my farewell to António Guterres after many years here at the UN. The EU and UN both emerged from World Wars. Europe remains heavily invested in a well functioning UN delivering peace, sustainable development and human rights to all.
