We were delighted to welcome colleagues from the Legislation Division - the central drafting office in Singapore - to our offices on Monday. We had a very interesting discussion covering differences between our jurisdictions, as well as online safety and the regulation of AI.

Our word of the month is “hoverport”, first used in the Hovercraft Act 1968 to mean “any area…designed, equipped, set apart or commonly used for…the arrival and departure of hovercraft”. Legend has it that OPC invented the word – it boasts 15 appearances in primary legislation.

Our word of the month is “transcendental”, which makes its only appearance in primary legislation in section 264 of the Communications Act 2003 - in which “belief” is defined as including “a collective belief in, or other adherence to…mystical or transcendental doctrines”.

Another music-based word(s) of the month for July – “pop music” as used in the Broadcasting Act 1990. According to the Act it features “a strong rhythmic element” and performances rely on “electronic amplification”, but it doesn’t matter whether it “enjoys a current popularity”.
