It's World Penguin Day, but as we celebrate this charismatic animal, have a thought about how they are reacting to climate change. Our new paper released today gives a short assessment of emperor struggles with sea ice loss. cambridge.org/core/journals/…

But Peter T Fretwell is hopeful:
“The fact that we are seeing these adaptations in the worst affected emperor penguin colonies gives us some hope that they can react to their changing environment and move to find more stable ice.

Almost time for our local fair, Reach Fair. It was the original medieval fair for Cambridge and has been celebrated each May Day since 1201 AD. reachfair.org.uk

I spoke with ⁦⁦Robin McKie⁩ from the ⁦The Observer⁩ about some recent changes in Antarctica, why they are so serious, and what the implications are for the rest of the world…. read his article: theguardian.com/environment/20…

3. Emperor penguins breed on 'land-fast' sea ice 🐧

It's a lengthy process: eggs incubate for 2 months, chicks aren't waterproof for 5 months.

We've only seen changes to Antarctic sea ice in the last 8 years, but even just 'early' sea ice breakup means chicks don't survive.

Although Nuyina is a magnificent research and supply vessel, in hindsight having two smaller ships could have been smarter: one dedicated for scientific research at sea and the other for transporting cargo and personnel to Antarctic bases. abc.net.au/news/2024-04-0…

Just got the final Bedmap3 grids. One thing that has struck me is that there is more ice in Antarctica than we previously thought. Significantly more😲

BAS researchers worked on this joint study of emperor penguin populations ⬇️

We need more research to know conclusively why this happened, but it could be connected to habitat changes - emperors are reliant on land-fast sea ice 🐧📉
