I’ll be speaking this Saturday at the Montclair Literary Festival about the relationship between truth and fiction in Plath’s work and (maybe) my own forthcoming novel, The Scrapbook, based partly on my grandfather’s WW2 experience. succeed2gether.org/april27-msu/

One of my biggest regrets is not taking a class with Helen Vendler at Harvard. Still, I learned so much from her critical works on Sylvia Plath and Seamus Heaney. Her books taught me how to read poems.

I’m at the Harry Ransom Center at UT Austin doing a deep dive into Anne Sexton’s papers. I’m in the early stages of writing Sexton’s biography and have a LOT of work ahead of me. But I’m so excited.

Goodbye, Lisbon! So much fun to discuss biography as an *art* and talk shop with Richard Zenith and Sarah Bakewell. Brilliant company all around!

'These are not just the wuthering heights written into immortality by the Brontës, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath, or the wily, windy moors sung about by Kate Bush. They are a unique, highly protected priority habitat.'

It’s early days, but I’m thrilled to announce that my novel, THE SCRAPBOOK, will be published next year by Pantheon Books. Set in Germany and Massachusetts, it’s a story about love, war, and the aftershocks of fascism.
