Two Zimbabwean nationals were sentenced today in the Cullinan court after we apprehended them in 2020 & retrieved a dead Temmink's pangolin - 10 years direct imprisonment, 2 years of which suspended for 5 years, 4 years for cruelty to animals 👊💥

8 suspects arrested today just outside Brits, South Africa for illegal possession and trade of a male adult Temmink's pangolin. Tast Team involved SA Police Service 🇿🇦 units - Cullinan STES, Pretoria K9, DPCI (HAWKS) as well as Department of Homeland Security, & IUCN PangolinSG

The illegal trade in pangolins in South Africa during 2023 reached an all time high with 50 individual animals retrieved and 90 suspects arrested. Two pangolins have already been retrieved in separate operations in this the 1st week of 2024. A luta continua!

In a sting operation in Brumer Johannesburg today, we retrieved one adult Temmink's pangolin skin, three suspects arrested.

It was an incredible moment, she was in the illegal wildlife trade.... Check... She is free...wild.. Now

I remember all of those I've helped, but a few sober me, ground me, humble me.
Goblin was one.
Housed in a bucket of green paint, gave up, he did not... He did eventually die from his wounds but more from his psychological PTSD. I reflect on his lesson often...

An embarrassing day for our courts today. Presiding magistrate in Modimolle sentenced pangolin trader to R6,000 or 3 years jail for illegal possession of a pangolin he wanted to sell for R70,000 in Vaalwater +a further 5 yrs suspended for 5 years 🙄

Following on my previous post -
After the successful retrieval of an adult female Temmink's pangolin in Kuruman yesterday where 4 suspects were arrested, she gave birth last night to a pangopup who seems perfect to form at full term. 2 individuals of an endangered species saved!
