Our seagrass nursery in West Wales is going from strength to strength

- With every new season we hit new milestones - this year we now have seed production happening in our tanks, and a combination of Zostera noltii and marina both expanding rapidly.

The Giant Guitarshark Rhynchobatus djiddensis is a critically endangered species of fish restricted to the Indian Ocean and Red Sea regions. One of our team was lucky enough to observe one last week in the seagrass in Southern Egypt

As many people pointed out, the seagrass ents of Halophila johnsonii in Florida do have male flowers, but elsewhere in the tropics. The genetics tell us its actually Halophila ovalis (and johnsonii isn't regarded a true species anymore).

Microplastic contamination of seagrass meadows provides a more sombre story from our YouTube series - this video explains a paper showing that 98% of all seagrass samples analysed contained microplastics, mostly fibres that usually come from our clothes.

The Ents of the ocean sadly do exist -

Halophila johnsonii is a seagrass species endemic to Florida, but unlike Tolkien's Ents, it's not the women who have left, instead researchers have never been able to find a male flower.

I'm your dear old friend, the oldest living organism on the planet, I'm called Posidonia oceania. My clones are so old that it's difficult to know my exact age, but it's upwards of 100000 years. I love the clear calm sun filled waters of the Mediterranean.

Seagrass meadows around the world remain impacted by swinging chain moorings. BUT there's a simple cheap easy fix to reduce impacts -

- use rope instead of chain as it doesn't impact seagrass

- particularly for smaller boats only moored in the summer

Periwinkles are important grazers of the fine microalgae that develop on temperate seagrass, keeping it healthy, but also providing a link to higher levels of the food web. This one was helping protect our seagrass transplants on the Isle of Wight.

I'm Halophila ovalis, I think i'm one of the prettier seagrasses in the team. My rhizomes are rich in sugars, so I get eaten ALOT by Dugong. Thankfully I produce many many seeds, and i'm super fast at growing, so i recover very quickly. The Dugong can't knock me down!
