The real tragedy is that this is no longer news but the accepted 'new normal'. The short term incentives focused on hitting 76% target in March also feel like have led to the predicted April bounce. It is an 'eternal winter' and totally grim.

In 2023, almost 100,000 elderly ppl in England wait 12 hrs + in A&E after decision for further care - age group 65+ sees 25-fold increase since 2019.

The right policies could stop this. Increasing 4 hour access standard to 78% from 76% doesn’t work. Instead focus on 12 hour length of stay, it’s already in the contract. Not doing this puts elderly people’s lives at risk
