But this is instructive. When what’s going on at some of these campuses makes reasonable progressives like Matt scratch their heads, think how much more it alienates most of the rest of America.

If you want to help Trump, this is how.

I know of multiple cases where entitled people from elite institutions got passed over because their off-putting attitudes showed during interviews.

“I note that most of your students are from rural Illinois. I’m just worried they won’t know their Shakespeare.”

There are so many wonderful works in their original forms that never get played. You all should play some of those instead of drawing noses and mustaches on these.

Congrats to Dommaraju Gukesh! Not the result I was hoping for, but the impressive young man clearly earned the win. I’ll be rooting for him in the championship match.

I must say, I hugely enjoyed the tournament. It added so much to my last few weeks! ♟️♟️♟️

One of the battles that needs to be won on the path to needed 20th-century music historiography reform is to break the stranglehold of the classicists on analysis of 20th-century symphonic and other music that left tonal supremacy behind in favor of theme and timbre.

The students camped out in the middle of the quad, which is against university rules. It’s probably against university rules because of shared resources, etc. Regardless, they refused to move. How do you get them to move? You call the police. What’s the problem here?

I've noticed this in literature about the topics/people I research. It's too hyper-political. Too much is presented as if proper appreciation of certain composers, and especially their music, should hinge upon understanding their personal politics, which are also often overblown.

I’m just going to say that there are advantages to working at the institution I do. Lots to be grateful for.

And even “major” scholars will make mistakes, have holes, or have blind spots. Experience and distance also reveal these things to their authors. No scholarly work is perfect. Often the best one can hope for is to make a positive contribution on balance.
