This week the community paid tribute to Alfreda Schmidt – a beloved Lansing icon, community advocate, & public servant who touched the lives of countless people in her incredible 97 years. I send my deepest condolences to her dear family, friends, & to all who knew and loved her.

West Point graduate, soon-to-be military intelligence officer, Stanford data scientist, and now Miss Michigan – Alma Cooper of Okemos can truly do it all. Alma: you’re making Mid-Michigan proud, and we can’t wait to see what amazing things you’ll do.

The survivors of Larry Nassar’s abuse were failed by so many leaders. While the settlement announced this week will never erase their pain, I hope it can make their path to recovery a little bit easier.
