A profound step in the right direction, because of the courage of some young doctors, & those senior colleagues in the background. The expectations of working unpaid overtime have existed in medicine for decades, but not much longer. Victoria, you're next. abc.net.au/news/2024-04-2…

. Like all technologies, it's great to explore the opportunities that now become real possibilities.
Efficiency, safety, accuracy.
But AI is no substitute for human experience & still can't adequately replace human creativity.
Back yourself, not the machine

It will be tempting for some to blame any & every demographic represented by yesterday's killer in Bondi, to stoke fear & division.
Let's not go down that path to the bottom. Let's await the full investigation, hoping we can learn something that might reduce future risk.

Thinking of my colleagues at St Vincent's Sydney today. Despite all their professionalism & training, this tragic case will be devastating to them. As a community, let's wrap our arms around the thousands who will long be traumatised by yesterday's attack.

Mass Casualty events such as today's stabbing of multiple people is not something we expect in Australia, but our Emergency services are providing immediate & expert care across a number of hospitals right now.

Horrific scenes just out of Bondi Junction as a deranged man with a knife stabbed multiple victims, including a baby.
For now, the focus is on safety, the victims, and those in need of emergency care. The wide extent of trauma will emerge in the hours ahead.

We spend all this time & effort trying to educate & prevent the terrible harms caused by concussion in sport, and then we see this madness on display.
Do the participants have any idea how dangerous this is, or the example they're setting?

More innocent lives taken indiscriminately, & we wonder if it will end. I can only see one solution, however elusive.
The end of Netanyahu's extremist govt. He has opposed a peaceful, independent Palestine at every turn for decades. Israel deserves better

It's easy to find powerful mission statements in most organisations. But I've seen too many examples where those values are tested by adversity, & the leadership is absent, or quick to blame others. The best test of culture: do you support your people when the going gets tough?

The more clinical research teaches us about repeated , the more cautious our advice must become. Angus Brayshaw has had to retire, and I think that's where Will Pucovski may need to follow. He'll be devastated, but retirement beats brain damage every single time.

Reflecting on my fourth decade as a doctor, & the things that motivate me at this stage in my career. It's the human interaction with patients & colleagues - more than anything else - that make me glad to put on the scrubs. Then I see this 70 year old new nursing grad! Amazing.

Division is death for governments, and so it is for professional associations. The separation of AMA (WA) from the rest of AMA Media is myopic & ultimately self-defeating. The only winners here are those who fear or resent an articulate, effective medical voice. A ridiculous call.

Nothing.
Nothing can justify the indiscriminate, systematic violence and privation being inflicted upon children & many other innocents in Gaza.
The pleas of Israel's allies are falling on deaf ears, and it can only strengthen the hand of their enemies.

The tip of an iceberg. We're seeing an enormous increase in serious injuries while riding e-scooters. Just as with bikes, a few simple measures would dramatically reduce their chances of ending up in hospital.
Like wearing the helmet, & not drinking.

I was dragging my feet at the idea of exercise going after work today. So glad I got on the bike. How beautiful, and good for my body and soul.
