This #InternationalWorkersDay , we stand for 'Social Justice and Decent Work for All.' Celebrating the efforts of our network advocating for the most marginalised workers—from achieving recognition for women in low-wage jobs to combating anti-trafficking narratives.

While in Calgary, we spoke with local organizations about how massage parlour workers are “anti-trafficked” - they're painted as docile immigrants to justify raids on their workplaces. This does nothing to keep workers safe and makes them fear police and law enforcement.

A one-year investigation, three police forces and no trafficking charges. All this time and resources have been used to crack down on adults having sex with each other. On top of that, the CBSA was called and will likely be used to deport workers who don’t identify as “victims.”

We connected with women at these businesses during a recent trip to Calgary, it’s infuriating to see another human trafficking unit framing immigrant sex workers as victims in order to lay prostitution charges and have women deported.

Permanent resident status for all undocumented people without exclusions will lift half a million people out of poverty. #StatusForAll

Mayor Brodie voted to continue Richmond’s raids on massage parlours and increase fines for businesses, causing women to flee their safer workplaces to more dangerous spaces. Brodie voted for the conditions that make these deadly crimes possible.

Good on B.C. mayors demanding parole be denied for a serial killer who targeted women including sex workers. Interesting to see Malcolm Brodie sign – 2 months ago at council, I told him he doesn’t have to wait for women to die to protect sex workers. Guess how he responded.
