Children are 20% of our population but 100% of our future. Yet we keep building places that steal their freedom and put them in danger. If we really care about the wellbeing of kids, we must start including them in urban and transport planning policies. bit.ly/45XqjNQ

This map is from the brand new Healthy Streets Scorecard for Tower Hamlets Council. The LTN that the council want to rip out is the pink area in the north west of the borough. As you can see there are also lots of (blue) LTNs in the borough that the council is happy to leave. 🧵1/

When you consider that Tower Hamlets still has almost the lowest rate of car ownership in the borough and about 85% of the population are using more sustainable forms of transport to get around, don't you think all residents deserve the infrastructure to make those journeys easy?

Good thread to read on #TowerHamlets. 👇 TLDR: THs has many historic LTNs. The Rahman administration isn't seeking to remove these but only the most recent one that has reduced road danger and improved #AirQuality. What if I told you that shade from street trees reduces surface temperatures by an average of 12°C and that concrete surfaces shaded permanently by a bank of trees are cooled by up to 20°C in the summer? You might not believe me. But it's true. Trees are #heatwave killers.

We're going to be at tomorrow's Critical Mass ride, to pay our respects to Matheus, who was killed in Tower Hamlets earlier this month. This isn't an LCC-affiliated ride, but please do join us - meet 7pm, Friday 26 July, BFI Southbank.

There is strong evidence that LTNs can make streets safer by lowering traffic levels, reducing street crime and enabling people to walk & cycle more. We continue to support boroughs implementing well planned schemes to cut traffic, improve safety & increase active travel 🚶‍♀️🚲💚
