“The process of city-making can be slow, mundane and difficult. But the greatest challenge lies in the realm of adult imagination. Or the lack of it.

Children call on us to be fearless like they are, dream boundlessly and infuse colour into the mundane.'

For a few decades these residential streets were busy rat runs and most space was crammed with parked cars. Now all through motor traffic is diverted elsewhere and most of the space is now used for greenery, cycle parking and a playground

Streets are the single largest public space in cities, and have the potential to improve age, gender, access and social equity. But only if we stop privileging one transportation mode over all others.

A pleasure to present “The Human Case for Fewer Cars in Our Lives” in Antwerp.

Working with local residents on their design and maintenance, Antwerp is piloting tuinstraten (“garden streets”) in five districts across the city.

They improve resiliency (to flooding and heat), liveability and sociability—making these spaces calmer, greener and more beautiful.

'Although the reduction of car use is the unifying theme, the attraction of this book is the family perspective from their own experiences.

It is a must-read for every professional in the built environment.'

!! Streetsblog USA calls CITY LIMITS 'gripping ... a propulsive, deeply human, and ultimately hopeful story of the people who are leading that fight, even as they stand to lose their homes, businesses, and the very fabric of their neighborhoods.'

The most insidious form of climate denial is no longer, 'It's not happening,' but the belief that incremental or tech solutions will solve this crisis.

The Case for More 9-Year-Old Biker Gangs

When the mom of a girl, 9, told her she had to ride her bike to get to a friend's house, a world of freedom opened up...for both of them.

Then the same thing happened neighborhood-wide!

Today we were honored to join a bike tour curated by the City of Antwerp inspired by our book ‘Curbing Traffic’.

Each stop drew from one of its ten chapters, spotlighting a specific policy to improve age- and gender-equity, conviviality, accessibility, resilience and prosperity.
