Fact of the week 📖

Owls have one of the lowest hybridisation rates of any wild bird group. Hybrids are more common in captivity, due to humans intervention. We don’t produce hybrids, but are home to several. Here is Hannah, a male British X African Barn Owl.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY 🎂🦉

This owl is our oldest owl at 32 years old today!! Rupert is also one of our most vocal owls, welcoming visitors young and old.

He is an Eagle Owl and a rare hybrid being a cross between a Siberian and a Turkmenian Owl.

Prior to mating the male will perform a courtship display including bowing and hopping to show off to his female. Males also provide their females with plenty of food before mating.

Eurasian Buzzards (Buteo buteo) are the UK’s most common bird of prey. With big broad wings they’re often seen soaring high in the sky using thermals to achieve their height. They eat a variety of food, including earthworms, rabbits & voles.

Raccoons (Procyon lotor), enter a state known as torpor in the cold winter months to conserve as much energy as possible while food is less available.

As the days get longer, and eventually warmer, they will be more active again.

Barn Owls are a whole family, consisting of around 20 species! Found nearly everywhere on the planet, they come in all different shapes and sizes. Pictured is Angel, a cheeky Ashy-faced Barn Owl (Tyto glaucops), native to the Caribbean.
