Watching 'Mona Lisa Smile' made me realize college profs seem charismatic in movies mainly because only a 3-min snapshot of teaching is shown. What about the rest of the class, where we do all sorts of acrobatics to maintain student attention?

Deeply saddened to hear of the death of Natalie Zemon Davis (1928-2023). A brilliant, warm, inspiring teacher, a person of astonishing generosity and integrity, and one of the greatest historians of our time. May her memory be a blessing.

I've long been teaching about colonialism, Orientalism, post-truth, etc. Yet another day I question if my efforts as a historian have any practical value, if our collective insights can foster global peace. Normalization of killing will remain incomprehensible to me.
