“Elected officials, scientists, bird experts & NY’ers are holding a rally to announce the introduction of a historic package of bills.

Shaun Abreu⁩ will be introducing the first of three pieces of 'Flaco's Laws' to stem unnecessary bird deaths.” abc7ny.com/flaco-the-cent…

👉Important point from Council Member Shaun Abreu on why tips are essential for Los Deliveristas Unidos : “You only get minimum wage for active-time work. That's when you're delivering the meal from door to door. So it's not actually necessarily true that people are making the minimum wage hourly.”

Council Member Shaun Abreu: “When the minimum wages went into effect, the tipping options were removed at checkout…I think this is…done in retaliation for Los Deliveristas Unidos those who won the minimum wage battle” fox5ny.com/news/deliveris…

Good day, New York!

Shaun Abreu talked all things worker protection, rat mitigation, e-bike safety, affordable housing, and economic development this morning with Rosanna Scotto & Curt Menefee on FOX 5 NY.

A great segment on this gloomy morning.

We need to wrap up the war on rats!

But we won’t get there by poisoning them—if we could, we already would have.

It’s time we tried rat contraceptives alongside trash containerization. Bonus points for reducing accidental poisoning of pets and wildlife.🦉shorturl.at/fAGOP

So important we think outside the box. The usual methods have been tried & tested. The result: more rats. Let’s continue to adopt humane methods that are not window dressing for a quality of life issue that is real to many NYers. Thank you to my CM Shaun Abreu. Voters For Animal Rights

I support this and think we need to put an end to the dangerous and ineffective overuse of rodenticides in the city.

Come for the great rat photos by Lucia Buricelli; stay for the 1967 story from our archive about Gov. Rockefeller trying to give rats contraceptives by dissolving a hormone from human birth control pills in vegetable oil and dipping meat in it: shorturl.at/bvHI5

*New* A City Council bill being introduced on Thursday would deploy contraceptives in hopes of reducing the rat population and protecting wildlife like Flaco: shorturl.at/bvHI5

Shaun Abreu A rat control plan that reduces the risk to our raptors (owls and hawks in particular) sounds worth exploring! Thank you for sponsoring this bill.

NEW from The New York Times: “The Next Frontier in New York’s War on Rats: Birth Control.”

They say policy is where the rubber meets the road and Shaun said okay bet.

When Los Deliveristas Unidos won a minimum wage agreement months ago, delivery apps retaliated by hiding tip options.

It’s plain wrong.

As I told FOX 5 NY, adding a tip option hurts no one—but it makes all the difference in these workers’ lives.

Council Member Shaun Abreu: “This is the most common sense bill for not only Deliveristas but consumers, and it comes at no cost to employers…We noticed almost immediately that these apps engaged in a clear attempt to retaliate against minimum pay.”

Columbia Institute of Global Politics hosted an event on the state of child care in New York City today (the same day as Caring Across Generations #CareCantWait’s “Care Can’t Wait” rally in DC). With an affordability and access crisis, and a quarter of child care workers in the city living in poverty… child care truly can’t…
