Excellent thread, this.

Points to add:
💷 In Medieval England they were used instead of money to pay landlords rent

❗️They are the most trafficked animal in the world and smuggled internationally by organised gangs

❌ European eels are Critically Endangered

We can’t forget about the importance of freshwater biodiversity, especially as freshwater species populations are falling the fastest of any species group!

Hydropower projects must understand their water-related risks, including biodiversity

It's almost !

To celebrate, take a look at how electronic pingers are helping save the last 80 river dolphins in the Mahakam river in Indonesia, and how the project could potentially help other river dolphin species around the world!

Living Planet Report shows a 69% decline of vertebrate populations in less than 50 years

Many will be surprised to know that freshwater fish populations declined a shocking 83%!
A result of the immense pressure on rivers, lakes, wetlands
Pollution
Overfishing
Dams
Etc.

Is building more dams the way to save rivers? Short answer: no.
'There is mounting evidence that greenhouse gas emissions from dams are often far greater than previously thought, with some facilities maybe even on par with those burning fossil fuels.'
