India’s proposal for setting up of an ‘AWEB portal’ as a repository of best practices & election related information /news of all member EMBs for knowledge sharing was also approved yesterday by the AWEB Executive Board chaired by CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar. #ECI

CEC also highlighted initiatives by ECI as Chair of AWEB in past three years, despite challenging time of COVID Pandemic. 5 new members added& ECI hosted 13 international training programmes for 215 election officials from over 35 member countries for their capacity building.

On the occasion, CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar also handed over the AWEB flag to Chairperson, IEC South Africa,incoming Chair of AWEB, and also assured ECI’s full and unequivocal support.

While stressing EMBs on the need for inclusive,accessible & participative elections, CEC said that “Adjusting inequalities means elections inclusive & accessible both in enrolment & polling faced especially for women,PwDs , senior citizens,young voters & marginalised populations”

Shri Rajiv Kumar stressed that AWEB as an engagement platform has a tremendous potential to address emerging challenges through knowledge sharing amongst EMBs on a regular basis in a structured manner. #ECI

CEC also highlighted the need to revisit parameters for assessment of democratic indices being used by certain international organisations that deliver judgements on election process of a country through ratings against unilaterally devised and often unvalidated parameters.

In his address, CEC urged EMBs to be more agile, flexible & future ready for emerging challenges ranging from non-inclusivity, social media, technology, false narratives, voter apathy, polarisation & even legislative-regulatory regime to deliver free, fair & inclusive elections.

While highlighting importance of an inclusive & participative elections in a democracy, CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar recalled wise words of father of our nation Mahatma Gandhi ji - “My notion of democracy is that under it the weakest shall have the same opportunities as the strongest.”

CEC Shri Rajiv Kumar while delivering his key note address as Chairperson AWEB recalled contributions of Father of our Nation Mahatma Gandhi ji & great leader Mr. Nelson Mandela at the opening ceremony of 5th General Assembly of AWEB, an association of 120 EMBs, at Capetown, SA.

During the meeting, CEC Sh Rajiv Kumar along with other members also released 4th issue of ‘AWEB India Journal of Elections’. It consists of research papers, articles,book reviews,etc.from eminent writers & researchers from democracies across the world in the field of Elections.

During the meeting, CEC discussed various matters including training & capacity building of election officials & exchange of best practices for further strengthening of mutual cooperation.

IEC South Africa is also currently Vice Chair for the Association of World Election Bodies

ECI delegation led by CEC Rajiv Kumar also held earlier today a bilateral meeting with Mr. Mosotho Moepya, Chairperson IEC South Africa. This bilateral meeting was org on the sidelines of 5th General Assembly meeting of AWEB at Capetown to be held tomorrow. #ECI
