The flows of money between countries and sectors is usually invisible. But they can tell us a lot. Money can be a prediction, telling us what the rich and powerful believe the future holds, but also a force that shapes that future - intentionally or not.

This can make it hard for local producers to compete with cheap imports from wealthier countries, and so is just as important as local investment in understanding what shapes sub-Saharan Africa's future.

A third big take-away from the report was that we have to look at the bigger picture.

Governments of OECD countries and China subsidise their own meat and dairy sectors at rates that dwarf the total investment in the entire agricultural sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

A third group were venture capitalists motivated not by monetary reward but by animal-ethics and environmental concerns. Largely based in South Africa, this group hoped to facilitate the development of an alt-protein sector in the region.

Some were motivated by food security and dietary public health, and wanted to facilitate intensification and scaling up of livestock agriculture.

Others were primarily looking for a financial return from a predicted booming market.
