One of the most spectacular shots I've seen in the IWM film collection. On this day in August 1942, during Operation Gauntlet, an Allied raid on the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen, a British engineer dynamites a small building.

It's in the nature of cruise liners to bimble off to new and exciting destinations, and most experts agree that the experience is better for everyone if somebody is in control of precisely where.

Unfortunately this was not the case for P&O's Britannia in Mallorca earlier today.

Battleships as buildings is an underappreciated genre.

Here is Duke of York with a more subtle take - but note how her paintwork matches the buildings ashore behind her!

Cruisers are generally the best looking ships in any fleet. In this particular instance that's a pretty damning statement...

No, these aren't album covers for that downtempo atomcore IDM band everyone's going on about. These are frames from that time the US blew up a reactor to see what would happen. Blue glow on the left is ionised air. Right is the core viewed through a mirror.

Earlier today, P&O Britannia broke its moorings from the dock in Palma during a storm. It drifted 350m in 11 min and bumped into the opposite dock, then rolled around a bit more until someone started the engines. Dreadnought Holiday might enjoy this.
