Welcome two new editing residents to The New York Times.

Budding Journalists: Each job/internship/opportunity constitutes a link in your career chain. Where is your chain leading you? What skills are you building? Think of your journey in the long term and you'll set a strong foundation for yourself.

Budding Journalists: Information is ubiquitous. So how can journalists compete? By offering the most relevant/ revelatory accurate information we can for audiences. How strong is our reporting? Context? Anecdotes? What will people learn? Think of these questions with your work.

Budding Journalists: Constructive feedback is not a sign of failure. It is gold that should be collected. Take it in. Reflect on it. Massage it into your writing, reporting and other aspects of how you work. Feedback is your friend.

And by doing the small stuff well (showing up to meetings, developing sources, monitoring public records), you often uncover big stories you wouldn’t have otherwise

Budding Journalists: You don't need to take down an institution to make a difference in the lives of readers. Impact comes in all sizes. Don't underestimate the influence a short feature, or a 600-word news story, or a well-done Q.& A. or even a brief, can have on someone's life.

Budding Journalists: Here’s hoping you can take some time to recharge soon. It’s been a busy news cycle. Covering the news, while sometimes a sprint, is actually a marathon in the grand scheme. To recharge, I went on a photo walk today. Here’s a tree in our neighborhood in N.J.

Budding Journalists: There is no secret sauce to success, but there are things that will help you beyond merely being the best journalist you can be. They include doing well the job at hand, harboring a desire to learn and grow, working with others and treating others well.

Budding Journalists: Longer stories don’t always make for better ones. Tightly-written pieces are often far more effective at conveying information and holding the attention. Save the longer stories for those unique moments when the breadth of your storytelling demand room.
