This is why I love the Thames. Handful of pottery sherd pick’n’mix from this morning’s low tide. From the top - medieval Surrey Whiteware handle (slashed & stabbed), Roman black-burnished ware rim & pot base, small sherd of Samian & my first fragment of Late Saxon Shelly ware.

Medieval buckle plate, copper alloy, 1250-1400.

What a survivor this is. I love the simple decoration of parallel dotted lines. It was once riveted to the leather belt or girdle of a Londoner some 600 years ago. An object from the age of Chaucer, Langland, the Peasants’ Revolt!

Fresh from the Thames Foreshore this morning is this interesting piece of wood! After a quick rinse at home it’s revealed some details and is that a date I see?! 1669? I’ll be contacting the FLO tomorrow!

Little did I know my pied-à-terre would be sunk into the claggy grey mud of the foreshore itself, my neighbours all these decaying fragments of the city’s past. Dead batteries, pig iron and wiring; the smooth old bones of monstrous fish.

This modest potsherd, found on the Thames foreshore this morning, dates to the 10th-12th century AD.

It’s Saxo-Norman shell-tempered ware (thanks Richard Hemery for the ID) & I’ve got a piece of the rim.

Just imagine: its owner may have witnessed the Norman Conquest of 1066 ⚔️

Having a two day #thames #found #claypipe sort, and came across these decorated stems. Mostly Dutch (apart from the waxed tip and the third down from the top, which is midlands 1700s (thanks to the society for clay pipe research!). #fragments of beauty. #mudlarking
