Thanks to all the Irish MEPs that voted in favour of the Nature Restoration law this morning, a hugely important piece of legislation. Disappointing to see Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus, and Luke 'Ming' Flanagan vote against restoring nature. #RestoreNature

2/13 Firstly, we need to give nature (constitutional) rights and properly protect it. Ireland's existing national parks are in a terrible state. The new Connemara national park would have to be different. Nature will have to come first.

A wonderful thread! ⬇️ Our key takeaway is that hedgerows should be managed on a cycle to create a diversity of habitats for wildlife.

Did you know that one of the most ambitious nature restoration projects in the history of the State is kicking off in Glenveagh National Park, Co. Donegal? I went to see it for myself and meet the team leading the renewal of ecological processes at landscape scale.

GHG emissions in Ireland from small-scale peat extraction (just from the drained land, not counting peat combustion) are about 25% higher than emissions from international aviation (3 Mt) and around 60% of the emissions from all power generation in 2023 (7 Mt).

This makes me sick to my stomach every time I see it. Why is this not major, major news in Ireland? A high chance of abrupt cooling in Ireland within the next two decades.

Only thing crazier than insane rate at which temperature records are getting smashed around world & extreme flooding events are occurring is fact that almost nobody is even talking about it. Almost nothing in our papers or broadcast media. Guess this is how it plays out?

This is not Hiroshima, this is Gaza. Gaza is nearly 3 times smaller than Hiroshima, and Israel has dropped the equivalent of 6 ATOMIC BOMBS on Gaza. Don't stop talking about Gaza as if your life depends on it, because their lives depend on it!

Ireland's ranking in forest cover looks bad enough, until you consider that 90% of what we have isn't REAL forest at all, but industrial plantations. The absolute state of us.

There's a lot of confusion over whether the Planning Bill will speed up housing delivery so I've decided to do a thread on the new provisions that will create obligations on developers with planning permission to build houses 🧵/1

A standing ovation in recognition of Minister Eamon Ryan’s transformative impact on climate action both in Ireland and on the global stage was apt at #MacGill24.

What are we thinking in continuing with a TV licence (if what has been leaked is true). Very retro but not what is needed. A media tax on every household and collected by Revenue Commissioners is what is needed and crucial. Eamon Ryan Simon Harris TD Micheál Martin
