Today in Sports History: (10/20/1996) Atlanta Braves star Andruw Jones becomes the youngest player to ever hit a HR in a World Series game (19). He would go on to hit 400+ HR and have 10 Gold Glove Awards. #braves #worldseries
Today in Sports History: (10/16/1909) Honus Wagner’s Pittsburgh Pirates defeat Ty Cobb’s Detroit Tigers 8-0 and win the World Series. Bad time for DET as it’s their 3rd straight WS loss and the pirates took advantage of a weak-armed catcher by stealing 18 bases in 7 games. Damn. #pirates #tigers
Today in Sports History: (10/15/33) the Philadelphia Eagles play their first NFL game after coming up with the $2,500 entry fee to join the league. They got dragged by the New York Giants that day 56-0 but it was worth it because the $2,500 franchise is now worth north of $4B. #NFL #Eagles #giants
Today in Sports History: (10/15/88) Los Angeles Dodgers great Vin Scully says “I tell you one guy we won’t see tonight, that’s Kirk Gibson, he can hardly walk!” In the bottom of the 9th, Gibson limps onto the field with two outs, a pulled hamstring, and hurt knee and delivers. #Mlb #dodgers
Today in Sports History: (10/14/1990) Atlanta Falcons guaranteed a victory over the San Francisco 49ers. Joseph Montana and
Jerry Rice respond by connecting for 5 of Joe’s 6 TDs and beat the brakes off the Atlanta Falcons. Falcon HC Glanville said “they gave us a lesson” after the game. Ouch.
