It was time to clean the Glass Floors on our High-Level Walkways this week 🫧

As you can see, it's a very different process from the average window wash!

Did you know that the 24 hours written notice required for a Bridge Lift has been in place since April 1962?

Any vessel with a mast or superstructure of 30ft (9m) or more can request a Bridge Lift. You can see all upcoming scheduled lifts on our website: bit.ly/bridge-lifts

Why is there a bale of hay hanging in Tower Bridge?

It illustrates a little-known London law around bridge maintenance on The Thames, which states that if there is a reduced height due to works, a bale of straw must be hung underneath to signal to passing river traffic.

We will be closing Tower Bridge to pedestrians and traffic for routine overnight maintenance between Tuesday 23 April and Saturday 27 April 2024.

The overnight closures will take place from 10pm to 5am. The closest alternative crossing is London Bridge.

On Sunday, 21 April 2024 two of our bridges, Tower Bridge & Southwark Bridge, will be closed to traffic as part of TCS London Marathon road closures. Both will remain open to pedestrians.

Tower Bridge closure: 8am-7pm
Southwark Bridge closure: 7.30am-8.30pm

Did you know that Tower Bridge’s stokers used to shovel 20 tonnes of coal per week? That's around the same weight as three adult elephants! 🐘 There were up to 30 men working in the Engine Rooms every day of the year.
