These two busts of the Emperor, Lucius Verus seem to show two sides to him - both are in the Hermitage Museum collection & the first shows how he was often portrayed, with magnificent hair & beard but the 2nd hints at the man behind the mask. Both date to around AD 161-169

To celebrate a mosaic depicting a turtle, from the Basilica of Aquilea, 4th C. The day was created in 2000 by the to raise awareness about turtles & tortoises, their disappearing habitats, & to encourage their protection.

Today the Romans celebrated the 2nd Tubilustrium and the Feriae Vulcani. Vulcan had his temple at the Circus Flaminius outside the perimeter walls of the city. They used to consacrate the enemy's bodies and weapons to Vulcan and purify the tubae after the battle.

It is -still!- - hoorah. This week we showcase Park Law, Sourhope Valley, near Kirk Yetholm in the . This is a large hillfort, one of 8 in the valley. Traces of stone-founded round-houses and walled yards can be seen at the east end.

Some glass and pottery Roman gaming pieces, which were all found at , in the , dating to AD80-180. A favourite game played by soldiers was latrunculi (robbers) - like modern draughts & chess with different types of pieces that were moved around a board.

It's ! 🐝 Romans knew bees' roles well, as noted by Aristotle and Virgil. They imported honey, especially from Malta, and used it in medicine, cooking, and cosmetics. Bees were seen as divine, bringing 'heavenly gifts of airy honey.' Celebrate their importance today!
