As someone who lived and worked in Chicago music—including with Shellac—for a lot of years, I think about a lot of things when I think about the late, great Steve Albini. But one of them is that he drove a PT Cruiser for years, and to this day, it still makes me laugh.

This Steve Albini anecdote (from Pitchfork's review of Ben Folds' THE UNAUTHORIZED AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF REINHOLD MESSNER) has remained lodged in my head ever since I read it 20-some years ago.

Steve was such a good, caring, and funny guy. I will always treasure the night in ‘99 when he took me to Second City to see a show. I walked into the Electrical kitchen at the agreed upon departure time and he looked at my head, smiled and said, “Your hair is peak Mellencamp.” ❤️

RIP Steve Albini.

A small thing I'll always remember is that when I worked at a venue, I'd see Albini's name on our will call every now and then. Dude could've gotten into any Chicago show for free I bet, but he bought tickets instead. A real one.

He was a custodian of original intent.
He had a way to connect bands to the most authentic identity of their idea - Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, Mogwai, The Breeders, Jesus Lizard and so many more.

Last night I witnessed my favorite local Braum’s employee JUMP THROUGH the drive-thru window to retrieve a wallet a customer had accidentally dropped and drove off without! It was pretty incredible. 🍨
