Most days in the field are good days as a botanist, but finding new sites for mountain avens, alpine cinquefoil & holly fern all in one day makes for a pretty special one! Also potentially Pyrenean scurvygrass in some springs?

Thrilled to find Goldilocks Buttercup thriving along the Allan Water tonight! With its spindly upper leaves and chunky lower leaves, and quirky lopsided flowers with between one and all five petals stunted, it’s an odd looking thing… but to me, just right! 🌼🐻🐻🐻

Yesterday a pair of female long-tailed ducks were spotted on the reserve and are still showing today!

These are coastal wintering birds and are currently heading north to their summer breeding grounds in Iceland/Finland.

Seeing as folk are interested in my attempt at #birding …after only 30seconds inside the Loch of the Lowes Wildlife Reserve hide today I’ve a #Lifer that’s never been seen at the reserve before! At first glance Comrie Colliery looks like a barren wasteland, but look a little closer and fantastic flowers start to jump out! Post-industrial landscapes can be havens for biodiversity. Small Cudweed, Sand Spurrey (probably) and Medium-flowered Wintercress blooming here!

I’m a #botanist trying to learn #birds . Folks say grasses look too much alike, but can we talk about Warblers please? If it wasn’t for song I’d be bamboozled by Willow Warbler & Chiffchaff, & don’t get me started on Pipits! 😂 Gaining a new skill is proving fun! #BirdingBotanist

Took my kids to The Birks Cinema this evening to see the new SCOTLAND: The Big Picture film #WhyNotScotland which helps to explain the landscape their mummy works in.
